Biography

Gonzalo Vazquez-Vilar received the Dual Bachelor's Degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Vigo, Spain, in 2004 and 2005, the Master of Science Degree from Stanford University, U.S., in 2008 and the Ph.D. Degree from the University of Vigo, Spain, in 2011.

Since 2014 he has been a Visiting Proffessor in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain. Previously, in the period 2011-2014, he was a post-doctoral fellow with the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Spain. He participated in a exchange program with the University of Applied Sciences of Saarland, Germany, and was employed as project engineer at Siemens AG, Germany in the years 2005 and 2006, respectively. He has also held appointments as visiting researcher at Stanford University, U.S., University of Cambridge, U.K., and Princeton University, U.S.

Gonzalo Vazquez-Vilar received the Pedro Barrie de la Maza Graduate Scholarship to join Stanford University and the FPI and Juan de la Cierva Research Fellowships from the Spanish Government. His research interests lie in the field of Shannon theory, with emphasis on finite-length information theory and communications.

Teaching

I participate in the teaching of the following courses offered by the Department of Information and Communication Technologies at Universitat Pompeu Fabra:

Undergraduate Courses

Communication Systems

Telematics Engineering Degree, 2nd year course.

The objective of this course is to introduce the student in the basic tools required for the analysis and design of modern  communication systems. The course is divided into two distinct parts regarding to its contents. The first half of the course presents the principles and main applications of cryptology, while the second presents an introduction to analog and digital communication systems.

Data Transmission and Coding

Telematics/Audiovisual Systems Engineering Degree, 2nd year course.

Data Transmission and Coding covers the main concepts used in the analysis and design of a digital communications system, including information theory applied to compression and data coding, as well as coding for error correction in communication channels.
